At the end of the book he asks his Maya teacher why he was able to have all these extraordinary experiences, and the answer he receives is "because you showed up." But he did more than "show up" -- he was prepared to do ceremony, bringing ceremonial objects, and was open to receiving and being of service. He also had the courage to stay put when things looked a bit scary. His is a life that is a prime example of what it takes to be a recipient of spiritual teachings, and we are all the better for it. A most interesting book. It reminded me of the adventures Carlos Castenedas had with Don Juan. Extraordinary but possible for anyone, with commitment. Extremely well-written, too. I recommend this book.

I found this book very heartfelt and real. It’s refreshing to read a book of spiritual experiences from someone who is also well grounded. While the experiences are truly incredible, they are believable because of the author’s excellent writing style and objectivity. He is as amazed by what is happening as the reader is — which makes you feel as if you're there with him. It's a page turner!
Rare is the reporter's narrative successful in a spiritual journey. This is one of those rare cases. John's attention to detail and adherence to factual truth and history blends brilliantly with his mystical and mythical awareness.
John's compelling story of his spiritual journey offers important insights for all who seek deeper meaning and understanding in their lives. The practices of the ancient Maya have much to teach us in today's troubled times and offer hope and healing to those open to new spiritual pathways.
I rated this 5 stars because his experiences resonated with my heart, because I would like a similar experience, and it was calming to me. This helped answer some questions but fired up more because I want to know more. Excellent book into his life
I had the privilege of working on this extraordinary chronicle of Kralovec's 30-year encounter with the ancient Maya at sacred sites in Mexico, Guatemala, and Honduras, and with the Lakota. The book combines vivid storytelling with rigorous anthropology and timely spiritual revelation in a way that will intrigue anyone curious about ancient cultures, their spiritual practices, shamanism, and Maya culture. Kralovec's descriptions of the spirit-ceremonies he witnessed or participated in are so gorgeously vivid and detailed that now, on every full moon, I picture the Moon Goddess Ix-Chel and her arrival among her people at Tulum. And when I walk in forests, I remember Kralovec's experiences with The World Tree, Wakah-Kan, when he visited the caves below Chichen Itza.
The book is also a record of a one seeker's spiritual evolution. I'm grateful that Kralovec spent so many years diligently exploring the places and practices he was drawn to, and then invested his time and will to share what he'd learned with the rest of us. I'm grateful also to the scholars and shamans from these countries and cultures who respected his curiosity and helped him learn. His story, which is also their story, vastly deepened my appreciation of the spirit of place, what's possible, where we come from, and who we are.
