This book totally works! This is the plan you should turn to when your little kids grow up and time-outs stop working. Our three young boys were fighting all the time and talking back. We found a family counselor who recommended this book and walked us through the program. The kids hated it during the first week or two when we implemented it, but we persevered and stayed consistent, doing exactly what the book said. The results were like night and day. Our kids began having perfect days when they never fought and kept all of the family rules. The kids do their chores in the morning without asking. They clean up after themselves and do "random acts of kindness". This book is no joke. Do exactly as it says and you will see miracles happen in your home. This book creates structure and consistency that kids appreciate and need, and that parents will love.We've already recommended this book to several other families. No, this is not a fake review. I only recently purchased this book and we are now ready to implement the system as described in its pages. This book was HIGHLY recommended to me by both my counselor and my daughter's counselor. This book helps you turn your child's behaviors around by modeling the type of behavior you them want them to exhibit. It does involve you to put effort into the plan as well (instead of just telling your child how THEY have to change). As we work our way through this plan, I hope to come back and update my review with positive results.
it seems like a hooky idea, good habit cards,,,, but WOW!!! has helped my teens and I see that we all needed a calling out. Beautifully written in a way that does not talk down to you.
Love the plan. It teaches children everything they need to know to manage life by the age of 18 years.
I like this book. But I am having a hard time getting into the plan. I feel like it is a little bit judgy.
I use this all the time in my counseling career when dealing with parenting issues. Has great ideas and they are practical.
Ever tell your child that if they don't do what you say right now they will never get to do something they love again...then think, why did I do that? This program is fantastic!! I've used it with my two boys (8 and 10 years old now) for over a year. The difference in our household is remarkable. The rules are set out and everyone understands them. The kids actively try not to break them. But if they do, they get consequences and we move on. Very little arguing, very little hollering. And for me, it prevents me from being able to react emotionally which I always regretted later.
My now 13 year old has put us through the ringer. We got this system on advice from our son's therapist. It took quite a while to set up all the paperwork involved to make this system work, but I am good at paperwork, and very organized. I don't see it working well for a stressed out mother/father with more than 1 or 2 kids, a job, household to run, etc. It's just SO much work to set it up. However, if you're desperate for some real change, and are willing to put in the time, it is definitely worth it.
Once it was set up, it took a while for all of us to learn and remember all the parts and pieces to the system. However, the beauty of that was that it was all in writing, so we could always look it whenever there was a question. My son didn't like the idea at first, but warmed to it in a few weeks. He followed the program for a while, then suddenly absolutely refused to have any part of it. What's good about this system is that it doesn't really matter if he follows it or not, it's simply there, and he will get the natural rewards and consequences based on his choices. He has gone back and forth with following the program, and not for a while now.
I like this system because it takes all the emotion out of discipline. I don't have to get mad at him anymore about his choices. If he doesn't do a chore, for example, he is just simply told to go pull the cards. If he refuses to pull the cards, he is to be in his room. Period. Black and white, no emotion. If/when he comes out to pull the card, and then does it, we say "good choice"!
Overall I like it also because it gives him a very clear set of expectations. He cannot be punished for doing something that's not on the rules list.
